The cities of Athens and Nelsonville were jazzed up over the weekend as some the best musicians took to the streets and stage during the 5th Annual Athens County Jazz and Blues Festival.
A slew of national and local jazz acts performed in uptown Athens Friday night in a four-venue pub crawl and the festival continued on Saturday with a jazz workshop for area middle and high school students at Nelsonville-York High School before wrapping up at the main concert at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville Saturday night.
Headlining the festival again this year was Mark Pender, trumpet player from the Conan O’Brien Basic Cable Band. Pender, originally from Kansas City, Mo., has played with such musicians as Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, David Bowie, Joe Cocker and Bon Jovi.
