An intensive one-week chamber music festival inspired by the spirit of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “the beautiful surroundings of Athens” takes place at various venues in Athens from Monday, Aug. 5 through Saturday, Aug. 10, according to a news release.

The Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy will host renowned musicians from around the country to teach young musicians during the day and present world-class chamber music concerts in the evenings, the release said. The evening performances will be hour-long casual concerts hosted nightly in several different locations around the city (with one in Nelsonville).

The Festival and Academy is the creation of Steven Huang, director of orchestral activities at OU. Working with Michael Carrera, associate professor of cello at OU and founder of the nonprofit organization Juniper Music Festival, Huang has combined a casual chamber music concert series with education.

The Juniper Music Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing classical music to smaller or underserved communities, and the pairing seemed natural, the release said.

This year’s series includes guest artists Donald Oehler, clarinet, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, cello, Grand Valley State University. OU music faculty and alumni will round out the performances, including voice, strings, piano and winds. Music will include at least one work by (or inspired by) Mozart each night, complemented by works from the 17th to 20th centuries.

All performances are free and open to the public and will culminate with the Festival Academy student performance on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Glidden Recital Hall on the OU campus. The complete listing of performances is as follows (all take place at 7 p.m.):

• Monday, Aug. 5, Glidden Recital Hall.

• Tuesday, Aug. 6, Christ Lutheran Church, Mill Street, Athens.

• Wednesday, Aug. 7, Under the Elms, College Green.

• Thursday, Aug. 8, Dairy Barn Art Center.

• Friday, Aug. 9, Stuart’s Opera House, Nelsonville.

• Saturday, Aug. 10, Glidden Recital Hall, Festival Academy Student Performance.
